Eduardo Torres-Cuevas (1942-2025)

Eduardo Moisés Torres Cuevas (Havana, September 4, 1942 – Havana, August 31, 2025) was a distinguished Cuban academic, historian, and university professor. He was a full member of the Cuban Academy of Language, a tenured professor, and a Doctor of Historical Sciences. He received the National History Prize and the Félix Varela Prize. He served as President of the Don Fernando Ortiz Center for Advanced Studies; director of the journal Debates Americanos and of the publishing house Imagen Contemporánea; a member of the National Commission for Scientific Degrees of the Republic of Cuba; a member of the National History Tribunal for the defense and awarding of scientific degrees; and a member of the advisory boards of the Social Sciences Publishing House, the Center for Martí Studies, and the Institute of History of Cuba. He served as a Deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power from the 7th Legislature. Elected to the Council of State in the extraordinary session of the IX Legislature of the National Assembly of People’s Power held on October 10, 2019, a position he held until 2023. Re-elected Deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power for the municipality of Santiago de Cuba, Santiago de Cuba province, on March 26, 2023, for the X Legislature. He was a meticulous researcher of the process of Cuban nation-building and the evolution of political thought and ideas on the island.
