Nadine Gordimer (1923-2014)

Nadine Gordimer was a South African writer and political activist. The first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, she is widely regarded as one of the most important literary voices to emerge from apartheid-era South Africa. Gordimer was an outspoken critic of apartheid and a committed supporter of the anti-apartheid movement, maintaining close ties with activists while using literature as a form of political engagement. Several of her works were banned in South Africa during the apartheid years. Her novels include Burger’s Daughter, July’s People, and The Conservationist.
