Paul Estrade

Paul Estrade is a French researcher, historian, and professor Emeritus at the University of Paris VIII. Over the course of his career, Estrade has built a reputation as one of France’s foremost scholars of Cuban studies, with scholarship focusing on Cuban exile networks in Paris, Franco-Cuban relations, and anticolonial movements in the Caribbean. His doctoral thesis, ‘José Martí or the Foundations of Democracy in Latin America’, is considered one of the most in-depth studies on Cuba conducted in France. He has authored and edited numerous works on Cuba’s 19th- and early 20th-century history, often highlighting the role of exile communities and international networks in shaping Cuban independence.

Over several decades, he has contributed significantly to strengthening intellectual dialogue between European and Latin American academic institutions and remains an important figure in the field of Latin American historical studies. For his efforts, he was awarded the International José Martí Prize in 2023.
