The José Martí Project for World Solidarity is constantly contributing to the creation of José Martí chairs that have been created and growing for decades in different universities and centers of higher studies in different parts of the world.
To enable joint work and interconnection between the José Martí chairs, the Project created from its early years the International Network of José Martí Chairs, which is coordinated from the University of Guadalajara, Mexico.
Since its creation, the network has convened international meetings of José Martí Chairs, with the aim of exchanging among specialists the study of the work of José Martí as well as of prominent thinkers from various parts of the world, in addition to proposing guidelines for its development.
Similarly, the network contributes to advising on the foundation and development of José Martí chairs, as well as supporting the dissemination of his activity and recognition of his systematic work and relevant initiatives.
What is a Martí Chair?
A José Martí Chair is a space dedicated to the study and promotion of the life, work, and example of José Martí within a university or center of higher learning, based on the academic and scientific activity of its members and collaborators. It also encompasses the implementation of diverse communication and socio-cultural initiatives that contribute to engaging and connecting students, and whose reach may extend beyond the boundaries of the university.
How to create a José Martí chair?
Martí Chairs are mainly established in universities and centers of higher studies, where there is a scientific potential that allows for research related to prominent personalities of the locality, the country and the continent.
These activities are allocated operating budgets, taking into account whether, based on their characteristics and structure, they are affiliated with an Institute, Faculty, or other entity within the relevant Center, be it Social Sciences, History, or Literature, directly under the purview of the Culture, University Extension, and similar departments, according to the regulations of each country. In some countries where they already exist, José Martí Chairs are linked to the University Chair of Hispanic American Studies, for example.
These chairs are generally directed by a Board of Directors made up of a coordinator, president or person in charge, representatives of the Directorate, Faculty or Institute to which the chair is attached, members of the university community, as well as other national personalities that are considered.
In general, the members of the Martí Chair will be professors and students interested in deepening, promoting and researching Latin American culture and thought, as well as other intellectuals interested in the same.
Where are there José Martí Chairs today?
Currently there are more than 40 Martí chairs in countries such as Mexico, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, Spain and others.
International Meetings of José Martí Chairs
Each year, the International Network of José Martí Chairs organizes a meeting with the aim of bringing together representatives of all the Martí chairs that exist in the world in a space conducive to sharing research results and good practices in the development of the activity of each chair.
