Samir Amin was an Egyptian-French Marxian economist, political scientist and world-systems analyst. Pioneering the dependency theory, his work challenged mainstream development models and emphasized the political economy of globalization. He worked for many years in Africa, particularly in Senegal, where he directed the African Office of the United Nations Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP). Having authored many books translated into multiple languages, he was also active in international intellectual networks and was closely associated with movements advocating alternative development paths and global justice.
