The Project develops this initiative for the translation and editing of the work of José Martí in different languages, as well as to stimulate other actions related to the knowledge of the written work of and about José Martí in different countries of the world.
Among the most recent projects are the Mayan-language edition of texts from the children’s magazine La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age), published by José Martí in 1889, intended for the Mayan populations of southeastern Mexico; the edition of La Edad de Oro for schools in Andalusia, Spain; the edition of La Edad de Oro coordinated by the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI), for a greater dissemination of this work in Ibero-America; and the edition with QR codes of La Edad de Oro, with access to multimedia material for each text of the magazine, co-published by the Center for Martí Studies (CEM) in collaboration with Uruguay.
The Project also promotes the development of publications linked to Latin American and Caribbean culture, seeking to bring people from all latitudes closer to the thought of José Martí.
What has been translated from José Martí´s works?
The most translated texts of José Martí are the children’s magazine La edad de Oro and part of his poetry, which includes several poetry collections, the best-known being “Versos Sencillos” (Simple Verses), a text considered very relevant and a reference in the dawn of the modernist literary movement in the second half of the 19th century.
How can I contribute to the translation and publication of José Martí’s work in various countries?
The Project welcomes individuals, projects, networks, institutions, and companies interested in collaborating on the translation and publication of José Martí ‘s works in any language, as well as those seeking access to existing translations.
The first step is to introduce readers to the original works, therefore we particularly recommend the magazine La Edad de Oro, his poetry collections, the selection of readings compiled by Roberto Fernández Retamar and republished by the Center for José Martí Studies in 2021, and the Critical Edition of the Complete Works, an ongoing publishing project by tthat very same Center.
